Burnout: how chronic stress affects cognitive abilities related to executive functioning and disorganization

In May of 2019 the World Health Organization defined Burnout in the ICD-11 as an Occupational Hazard.

"Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:"

  • 1. Emotional and / or physical exhaustion
  • 2. Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job
  • 3. Reduced professional efficacy or accomplishment

Consequences of meeting these criteria include:

Time Management- when you are functioning in a constant state of stress you are likely to be late, lose track of time and run over meeting to meeting. Making deadlines becomes increasingly difficult which results in obvious poor work performance.

 Poor Eating and Sleeping habits- when you are physically and emotionally exhausted you tend to reach for quick, convenient foods and try to stay up late at night or get up early in the morning to make up for all the work you can't accomplish in the work day. This can lead to gaining weight, being forgetful, and having cognitive fogging in which you are feeling the effects on memory and executive functioning.

 Disorganization- not only do employees who are burned out have difficulty with time management, they also tend to become quite disorganized. They forget to do things like put appointments / meetings in their calendar, they confuse details, and can't manage work and home life. They may have a messy work area; they may have emails into the thousands in their inbox and have notes and sticky note reminders all around them in their desperate attempt to be organized.

Bio

Dr. Sheryl Ziegler holds a Doctorate of Psychology. She is the author of Mommy Burnout: how to reclaim your life and raise healthier children in the process. Dr. Ziegler is also  a TEDx Speaker, Podcast Host, Media Contributor, Keynote Speaker, Founder of The Child & Family Therapy Center at Lowry and Entrepreneur. She specializes in anxiety, depression, trauma and chronic stress.

 Over the years, Dr. Ziegler has been a clinical consultant to CereScan, a functional brain imaging center that helps identify underlying biological causes of brain-based disorders.

 On a national level, Dr. Ziegler has been a guest on The Today Show with Megyn Kelly, The Katie Couric Show, and The Jenny McCarthy Show. She is a regular contributor on the Head Line News network on shows such as Weekend Express, On The Story and True Crimes. Locally, she is a regular go to expert on multiple news outlets. Dr. Ziegler travels the country speaking on burnout in the workplace, parenting burnout, anxiety and depression, suicide, social media, bullying, and other topics related to mental health.

 Dr. Ziegler also wrote the foreword to the book, Simplified: a real life guide to organizing your life and saving your sanity.
